Arcade Fire gives a new gospel

It is undeniably true that Arcade Fire is one of the most amazing bands living, performing and making intense, inspirational and thought-provoking music in this modern age that we are experiencing. Their latest album, The Suburbs, was released in 2010, and while listening to it I realized I’ve never seen them perform live. So, I looked around a bit and found some great webcasts and TV broadcasts of concerts from 2005-2011. If you’re not familiar with this band (or if you are), then watch every one of these concert videos. They’re all great. You can even read all the lyrics here. Very nice. I will definitely be seeing Arcade Fire next time they come around. And probably every time after that, too.

The Mike Wallace Interview with Aldous Huxley

The internet can truly be a wonderful resource. Thanks to this seemingly endless digital archive, I can share an insightful and thought-provoking interview with Aldous Huxley, a great mystic and philosopher who wrote the classic books Brave New World and The Perennial Philosophy: An Interpretation of the Great Mystics, East and West, among others. Huxley’s controversial appearance on The Mike Wallace Interview, a popular show from 1957-1960, was originally broadcast nationwide on prime-time television on May 18, 1958. Thanks to the University of Texas for sharing the complete interview in their amazing archive, and to covellz for sharing a subtitled version on youtube. You can watch it here. A complete transcript of the interview is below.

Program Description: Aldous Huxley, social critic and author of Brave New World, talks to Wallace about threats to freedom in the United States, overpopulation, bureaucracy, propaganda, drugs, advertising, and television.

more Decemberists for December…

I’ve been into The Decemberists since posting Colin Meloy’s solo performance the other day, so I put together a collection of 11 live TV performances from 2005-2010 (highlights below) in mp4 (video) and mp3 format (the mp3 version includes a cover of Bjork’s “Human Behaviour” and “Crazy on You” by Heart). There’s also a brief but awesome 5-song set from Austin City Limits that I found on youtube (mp3 & mp4). This is all good to hold us over until their new album, The King is Dead, is released on January 18, 2011.

We Both Go Down Together (Conan O’Brien 2005)

The Crane Wife #3 (Austin City Limits 2007)

The Perfect Crime #2 (Austin City Limits 2007)

The Mariner’s Revenge Song (2007)

The Wanting Comes in Waves (Jools Holland 2009)

The Hazards of Love (Rock the Garden 2009)

The Rake’s Song (Rock the Garden 2009)

Crazy on You [Heart cover] (Rock the Garden 2009)
