Arcade Fire gives a new gospel

It is undeniably true that Arcade Fire is one of the most amazing bands living, performing and making intense, inspirational and thought-provoking music in this modern age that we are experiencing. Their latest album, The Suburbs, was released in 2010, and while listening to it I realized I’ve never seen them perform live. So, I looked around a bit and found some great webcasts and TV broadcasts of concerts from 2005-2011. If you’re not familiar with this band (or if you are), then watch every one of these concert videos. They’re all great. You can even read all the lyrics here. Very nice. I will definitely be seeing Arcade Fire next time they come around. And probably every time after that, too.

God in the 21st Century

On May 24, 2005, Bishop John Shelby Spong presented a lecture on “Who is the Popular God in Public Life in the 21st Century?” in Columbia Hall at the University of Oregon campus [mp4]. This was around the time of publication of his book, The Sins of Scripture: Exposing the Bible’s Texts of Hate to Reveal the God of Love.

Cyndi Lauper’s tribute to John Lennon

One of my favorite artists, Cyndi Lauper, has performed at several John Lennon tribute concerts through the years, and she always does such amazing interpretations of his songs. Very good stuff. Nobody has a voice like this lady.

the Dalai Lama on Ethics for Our Time

In 2009, the Dalai Lama gave an amazing talk, which happened to be filmed, at the University of California in Santa Barbara. The intro speaker says the Dalai Lama is great is because “he embodies what he teaches.”

“Ethics for Our Time” summary from UCtelevision:

“In this talk His Holiness turns to one of his favorite themes: the importance of compassion. Far from being a uniquely Buddhist concern, the Dalai Lama explains why caring for others can be the basis for a rich and rewarding life for all people. Whether one is a Buddhist or not, whether one is religious or not, a concern for the welfare of others is just good common sense. Compassion changes egotism into empathy, and transforms fear into freedom. It is the basis for both personal and communal peace.”

Endless thanks to UCtelevision for sharing this wonderful talk on youtube! You can watch it here or save the mp4 video.

more Decemberists for December…

I’ve been into The Decemberists since posting Colin Meloy’s solo performance the other day, so I put together a collection of 11 live TV performances from 2005-2010 (highlights below) in mp4 (video) and mp3 format (the mp3 version includes a cover of Bjork’s “Human Behaviour” and “Crazy on You” by Heart). There’s also a brief but awesome 5-song set from Austin City Limits that I found on youtube (mp3 & mp4). This is all good to hold us over until their new album, The King is Dead, is released on January 18, 2011.

“Hold On” (a sonic poem)

This sonic poem happened a few minutes ago. I haven’t been singing much lately, so it’s a rarity.

“Hold On” by jason elijah

hold on
to what you’ve got
don’t hold on
to what you’ve got
you just let it go
just tell me no
just hold on
just hold on
let it go

hold on
no, no, no, no…

just hang out for
a little while
just hang out
and nod and smile
just hang around
and take what you want
and just go, go away

just hang on
to nothing at all
just tell me
oh, nothing about it
I don’t want to know
just hang around and
take what you need
and then let go
let go of me
just let me be
here alone

Imogen Heap at Glastonbury

Imogen Heap performed at the Glastonbury Festival recently, and the set included an a capella version of her song “Earth” (one of my favorites) which you can see below. Or download the show (.avi format) here.

“Earth” lyrics by Imogen Heap

You’re not golden
I’m getting tired
Act like you own the place
When really you’ve only just arrived

I caught first glimmers
In hides and skins
Look who’s all grown up
Black swanning about the solar winds

You’re gonna lose it all
And find yourself on your knees
So, get a grip and you might
Flow, reverse the great, slow bleed

I’ve tried patience, but
You always want a war
This house won’t tolerate any more

Stop this right away
Put that down and clean this mess up
End of conversation
Put your back in it and
Make it up to me now

The cold shoulder
Folded arms and looking up
You’ve never listened
And carry on careless, regardless

This is not a fire drill and
If we hold any hope
It’s harmonic connection
And stereos in biosis

These Legoland empires
Choking out mine now
You’re everywhere, everywhere
Multiplying around me, child

A strain on my heart
This rock can’t tolerate any more

Stop this right away
Put that down and clean this mess up
End of conversation
Put your back in it and
Make it up to me now

Baby, behave, we’ll make it work…

You’re only what you give back…
